WHAT IS A LASER

PHOTON

Elementary particle of Light, without mass and electric charge.

Its energy is given by the simplified formula  E(eV)= 12400/wavelenght (angstrom)

Exemple:  photon wavelenght: 632.8nm (HeNe red line)

Energy (eV) = 12400/6328 Am = 1.9555 eV

LASER:

Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation

The LASER is light.
Foreseen by Einstein in 1917, the stimulated emission phenomenon was verified

in 1960 by Th Maiman, who constructed the first ruby laser

WHITE LIGHT

A desorganized light made of photons of different wavelenghts and emitted

in an anarchic manner

LASER LIGHT

An orderly light made of coherent photons, ie:
spatial and temporal coherence: simultaneous emission and same wavelenghts
directivity of the beam and high power density

PRINCIPLES OF MANUFACTURING

To manufacture a laser, we need:
Active medium: solid, liquid, gas, plasma
Pump energy: electric, optical, chemical, radiative, nuclear
Optical cavity: made up of 2 parallel mirrors
